July 9,  2001

Mr. Lewis Cullman

Chairman, Chess-in-the-Schools

346 W 46th Street,

New York, NY 10036

Dear Mr. Cullman:

The many contributions you have made to chess, especially through your New York City Chess-in-the-Schools program, are enormous. We all greatly appreciate this and extend our thanks to you.

Former USCF President Fred Cramer also contributed a great deal of personal time and money to US chess. Perhaps his greatest contributions were to promote greater communication and to support excellence in chess journalism. The late Fan Adams recognized this and used a portion of Fred’s quarter of a million-dollar bequest to Chess-in-the-Schools  to initiate a “Cramer Awards for Excellence in Chess Journalism” program. The program has been highly successful and well received by chess journalists throughout the USA.

Unfortunately, Chess-in-the-Schools is now discontinuing that program. In the spirit of Fred Cramer’s history of chess contributions, we the undersigned respectfully request Chess-in-the-Schools to transfer $75,000 of the Cramer bequest to the US Charitable Chess Trust. This would provide sufficient equity for the ongoing continuance of the Cramer Program.

Thank you in advance for your attention and consideration of this request.
