5 Separate Workshops

Concurrent with the Scholastic Camp

 

Dates:   June 14 - 18, 2004
Times:   9 am - 3:30 pm
Where:  T. H. Rogers School, 1.5 miles west of the Galleria (see map)

What:

  • Sign up for each workshop individually per your interest.

1.        Learning to play chess or Improving your own play.................. Monday

2.        Teaching Chess ...........................................................................Tuesday  (full)

·         6 hours of G/T Differentiated Curriculum

3.        Incorporating Chess into your Classroom Curriculum ..............Wednesday  (full)

·         6 hours of G/T Creativity and Instructional Strategies

4.        Club Management, including starting a club .............................Thursday

5.        Fun stuff such as:...........................................................................Friday

·          Running a tournament

·          Human chess games 

  • The workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday - Teaching Chess and Incorporating Chess into your Classroom Curriculum - will both confer 6 hours of G/T or CPE credit sponsored by the Houston Independent School District's Advanced Academic Department.

  • The Tuesday and Wednesday workshops are limited to 50 participants.  However, if demand is great, we may open another section on Thursday or Friday.

Cost:  $10 per day, lunch not included.

  • Note on lunch:  There will be a half hour lunch break.  You may bring your own, buy lunch from the school cafeteria, or order a box lunch from Quizmo's that morning.

Instructors: 

  • Dr. Alexey Root (click link below for short bio) will be teaching Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday

  • Martha Jenkinson, Coordinator of the T. H. Rogers Chess Program will facilitate the Thursday program

  • Jim Liptrap, Sponsor of the Klein High School Chess Program, Head of the Houston Scholastic Chess Association, and a Senior Tournament Director will be with us on Thursday and Friday

  • George John, President of the Texas Chess Association and a Senior Tournament Director will be with us on Friday

Registration: 

  • HISD teachers:  to register for the credit bearing workshops, please sign up through e-TRAIN.  The workshops should be in the system by the week of April 19th.

  • All other registrants:  Print and complete the Adult Registration Form.

    • including HISD teachers for workshops on Monday, Thursday, or Friday
    • including all other teachers, parents or other adult sponsors

  • If you sign up through e-TRAIN, you may pay the $10 fee on site.  Otherwise, please enclose $10 for each day that you will be participating.  You may include all of the fees in one check.
